The Master of Science in Mathematics is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of advanced areas of mathematics and of their applications and connections to other scientific disciplines. The programme is organised into curricula, each of which offers a range of specialised tracks.

The Mathematics for Biology and Medicine track, within the Mathematics and Statistics for Life and Social Sciences curriculum, equips students with the theoretical, methodological, and computational tools required to develop, implement, and apply mathematical and statistical models to problems arising in biology, ecology, epidemiology, molecular networks, and medicine. To this end, students acquire a strong foundation in mathematical modelling, statistics, scientific computing, differential equations, continuum mechanics, and numerical analysis.

A distinctive feature of this track is the opportunity to undertake internships and engage directly with clinical and biomedical research through collaborations with hospitals, universities, research centres, and companies in Italy and abroad. The expertise gained in modelling and statistical analysis provides an excellent basis for pursuing doctoral studies in applied mathematics, biomedical sciences, and related disciplines, while also being highly valued by employers, particularly within the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

The track is closely connected with the activities of the Laboratory for Mathematics in Biology and Medicine, offering students further opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research at the interface between mathematics, biology, and medicine.
