The European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB) was founded in 1991 during the first European Conference on Mathematics Applied to Biology and Medicine in l'Alpes d'Huez, France. The mission of the ESMTB is to promote theoretical approaches and mathematical tools in biology and medicine in a European and wider context. This goal is pursued by the organization and support of scientific events, by the publication of the European Communications, and by promoting the dissemination of information of interest to members and followers of ESMTB on this website.

• ECMTB conference: The biannual conference of ESMTB is the European Conference of Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB), taking place in different European cities. The next ECMTB 2026 will take place in Graz, Austria, 13-17 July 2026. Open for abstract submission now!
  
  
• Prizes: ESMTB annually honours an outstanding PhD thesis in the field of mathematical and theoretical biology with the Reinhart Heinrich Doctoral Thesis Award, and together with the SFBT awards the Ovide Arino Outreach Award every two years for seminal PhD contributions in mathematical and theoretical biology from southern countries. 
  
  
• Online colloquia: ESMTB organizes online colloquia, featuring excellent researchers in Europe in topics of interest to the members of the  society. The colloquium is open to everyone, with prior registration to our mailing list. 
  
  
• Monthly newsletter: A monthly newsletter with announcements of scientific events, job opportunities, prizes etc is sent to the subscribers of the ESMTB mailing list, along with details about the ESMTB online colloquium.
